Overview
This project involved dam removal and channel restoration at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Niles, Illinois. We cleared trees, installed 500 LF of temporary timber mats, built a stone causeway through the North Branch of the Chicago River, demolished the dam, placed rip rap along the slopes, and removed unsuitable material from the riverbed.
Challenges
Foundation Mechanics needed to coordinate work with high water levels and causeway elevations to provide safe access to the project. In addition, we had many environmental considerations on this project.
Solutions
We utilized turbidity curtains to trap sediment and silt while removing the dam. Foundation Mechanics also changed all machine oils to biodegradable options for this project.
