Overview

Foundation Mechanics crews constructed a 72’x36’x18’ steel-framed, open-air structure to host Navy Pier’s interactive Butterfly House, a temporary exhibit open during the summer months. We built the domed structure on a prepared stone base, secured with heavy timber and steel anchors. Additionally, Foundation Mechanics built 1,200 SF of ADA-accessible pedestrian pathways using crushed granite.

Challenges

The structure’s interior required extensive infrastructure for exotic vegetation.

Solutions

Our teams installed planting beds with drainage and irrigation systems for trees, shrubs, plugs, and other plants.
