Lakefront Restoration
Waukegan Harbor North Pier

Originally constructed in the 1950s, the Waukegan Harbor’s North Pier required concrete resurfacing and reinforcing. We also installed three steel plates on the north and south sides of each of the pier’s 25 monoliths using barge and crawler cranes.
At the project’s inception, the 625-foot pier suffered from significant deterioration due to its age. In addition, the lake unexpectedly rose to its highest water level in 35 years before we started work.
We laid out formwork with bulkheads at each monolith, pouring concrete from the shore using the tremie method to place the concrete from the bottom up. To address the high water level and protect the pier from waves, we extended the height of the steel plates and installed a mud slab and 18 inches of reinforced concrete.
